How many reading this blog are in a state of depression, funk, loneliness, or are generally feeling disconnected? I know thru my clients that I have seen recently and even myself to a certain degree, that what one is feeling are “empty spaces”. The challenge is NOT to fill up the spaces but realizing that when we feel empty we are actually discovering the power of silence. The power of silence has birthed some of the greatest works of art known to man: Mozart, Michelangelo, and Tolstoy, just to name a few. Every writer knows what empty spaces are about because without them, God could not enter in. Silence is where we find God. And empty spaces are a wake up call from God and your Muse because this is how he gets our attention. Otherwise we are all too busy dealing with kids, spouses, chores, jobs, ect.. to really pay attention. And I know from my clients that this “business” is a way to avoid the empty spaces(pain) because of what they might find there.
The more you resist empty spaces(silence)the larger they will feel; the more unbearable they will seem; the more desperate, depressed and lonely you will feel in the space around you.
So what do you do? You stop running, stop filling up every moment of your day and simply embrace the ‘void’. Stay quiet and ask what is it that I really need to know at this moment? And the answer and your deliverance will come in time.(on a side note this is where entrepreneurial ideas come from). This reminds me of a quote that I have at my office by Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching:
” Give up, and you will succeed. Bow, and you will stand tall. Be empty, and you will be filled. Let go of the old, and let in the new. Have little, and there is room to receive more”.
Blessings to all,
Suzanne
